Intensive Care Unit

  Back

The Intensive Care Unit at ChesterGates accepts patients requiring critical care, both referred and from within the hospital.

Patients in ICU receive individual nursing care and attention. ChesterGates is staffed by veterinary surgeons and nurses 24/7. We understand that pet emergencies are stressful and upsetting and our experienced team is here to help withn their knowledge and understanding. The work of the critical care staff in the ICU makes a crucial difference to the chances that patients have of survival.

Conditions that can benefit from ICU care include serious trauma, repsiratory compromises, spesis, bleeding disorders, unstable diabetes, adverse chemotherapy drug reactions, status epilepticus, heat stroke, smoke inhalation, burns and urinary obstructions.

The facilities include:

  • walk in kennels which are large enough to allow several staff members to attend to a patient in the kennel and allowing advance monitoring of the patients
  • a bank of smaller kennels, three of which are oxygen cages with temperature and humidity control
  • merlin ventilator unit suitable for anaesthesia and ICU patient ventilation

The ICU is equipped for advanced treatment and patient monitoring including: pulse oximetry

  • capnography,
  • constant ECG
  • invasive and non-invasive blood pressure

The in house laboratory provides full blood biochemistry, haematology, electrolytes and blood gas analysis.

The ICU team is led by Miguel Martinez DVM CertVA MRCVS, who joined ChesterGates in January from the Veterinary School at Bristol where he completed a three year residency for the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia. His main areas of interest are cardio respiratory emergencies, neuroanaesthesia and management of septic cases. Miguel has been qualified since 1997 and ran a mobile anaesthesia service in Madrid before moving to the UK.
